SECRETARY AND POLITICS. CHRISTCHURCH OPINION. GOOD WISHES FOR CANDIDATE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION, j CHRISTCHURCH. Sunday. At a special general meeting of the I Canterbury section of the Post and Tele--graph Officers' Association held to con-, sider the question of agreeing to alley ,v the general secretary, Mr. Combs, to stand for Parliament and the rescinding j of the resolution" to affiliate with tihe Alliance of Labour, Mr. 11. B. "W-aud, presided over a small attendance. 1! he chairman moved "(a) that this section, recognising Mr. Combs' worth and ability and believing that irrespective of pat* ty ho would be an asset to Parliament, ax- I tends him cordial good wishes for succd « at the forthcoming general election; (f j) | that Mr. Combs' services as permana nt secretary be retained in the meantime should he be successful in gaining pd litical honours in December next,; (c) tV,at 112 days accumulated leave be grani ted Mr. Combs as early as possible. f his ( section is of opinion, however, that lany such accumulation of leave is wh oily undesirable and strongly urges the executive committee to guard against anj> repetition of the same in future; (d) that the section recognising that the as 3 ociation consists of approximately 8000 members with widefy differing views on matters political and otherwise is str» mgly adverse to use of Katipo for party Jpropaganda and advises the executive accordingly." The chairman deprecated the Wellington section's attack on Mr. Gonitis, who had done good work' for the association. Political rights had been advocated by the association and this being the case it was unfair to deny Mr. Coiiibs such rights himself, since he had placed his resignation in the hands of t/he association. The motion was passed after some discussion on Clause I), the opinion being expressed that the columns of Katipo had been used too much in the par.t for political purposes. The chairman moved that the executive take steps to rescind the motion relative to the decision to affiliate with the Alliance of Labour. In doing so he subimitted that instead of gaining anything l»y deciding to affiliate with the alliance numbers had in fact gone back. As the meeting had dwindled until there was no quorum a decision on the matter was postponed.
