The shooting season opened auspiciously yesterday, when some To Kuiti sportsmen secured excellent bags of duck. They consider the outlook for the season most promising. Quail are very numerous. Pheasants are to bo found in various parts of the district, the breeding season having been a particularly good one. The birds released at Mahoenui and Awakino are reported to bo doing well. THE TAURANGA DISTRICT. DUCK VERY NUMEROUS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANGA. Saturday. Sportsmen generally report fairly good luck among the pheasants, but no large bags have so far been reported. Quail are more plentiful than last year. Duck aro very numerous in and near the lagoon, and a number of substantial bags art! reported. One gun in the Pangitaiki area secured 21 duck, and three guns in the same locality between 70 and 80 duck. THE NORTH AUCKLAND AREA. J'JIEA SANTS PLENTIFUL. [ill" TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. 3 WHANG ARE I. Saturday. Sportsmen who were out in districts adjacent to Whangarci met with various success yesterday. Several local enthusiasts state that pheasants are plentiful. The breeding season has been much later than is customary, resulting in sportsmen encountering numbers of halffledged birds. One sportsman actually had the uncommon experience at this time of the year of coming across a hen bird with a nest of eggs. Ducks were in evidence at their favourite haunts on the Wairoa River and the lagoons on the Hikurangi swamp. Some good bags were secured. GUNS OUT NEAR ROTORUA. GOOD BAGS OF DUCK. [BY TELEGIIAPII. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ROTORUA, Sunday. Good bags of duck are reported by sportsmen shooting in the vicinity of Rotorua. Five guns operating at Galatea secured 56 1 brace.
