MAMAKU BUSH ROAD.

METAL SURFACE PROMISED. HIGHWAYS BOARD SUBSIDY, j The early improvement of the, road through the Mamaku , Bush is , foreshadowed by the decision of the Main Highways Board to subsidise the work to be performed by the Matamata County Council. This stretch of road is one of the worst portions of main highway in the Dominion, the clay'nature of tha surface becoming practically impassable for motor traffic 'in winter. As this portion of road lies on the main ront<! from Auckland to Rotorua, its importance ia easily recognised. The intentions of the Main Highways Board were roughly outlined by Mr.* ,M. H. Wynyard, a member of the hoard, at last evening's meeting of the. coujncif of the Auckland Automobile, Association.. The matter of improving this road,_ he said, was now in hand, and a considerable proportion of the expenditure involved would be found by the Highways Board. The idea was to grade the road and surface it with rhyolite rock, such as was used at the Rotorua end, but ultimately it was proposed to put stone above the rhyolite. The initial work itself would result in a much improved surface, adequate for the amount of traffic that would pass over it.
