FORGERY OF A CHEQUE.
AN IMMIGRANT'S OFFENCE. DISAPPEARANCE FROM FARM. A charge of forging the name of A. Dewar to a cheque for £l2 on the National Bank of New Zealand was preferred against Henry Skelton, aged 30, a recently-arrived immigrant., in the Police Court yesterday. Aubrey Ij. Middlemiss, bank cleric, stated accused tendered a cheque for £l2 signed bv "A. Dewar at the National Bank, but payment was refused, and the cheque returned. Albert F.dwird Dewar, farmer, Papakura, gave evidence that accused was bis employ tor lour days, from February 21, and then disappeared while witness was absent from the farm. Witness had an account at the National Bank, and as the result of a visit to (he bank on March 3 he examined his cheque-book and found » form was missing from it. Ralph Abbott, jeweller's salesman, stjited that accused negotiated for the purchase of a watch, but the cheque for £l2, which he offered in payment, was not. accepted. A statement by accused, admitting the charge, was read by Detective Naider. Accused asserted he had received the blank cheque form from a man whom he did not know. A plea of guilty was entered, and Skelton was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence, bail of £2OO being uilu'.vcd.
