FUND FOR EDUCATION.

.....,. A MUNIFICENT DONATION. SIMILAR TO RHODES TRUST. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK. Feb. 21. Mi-. Simon Guggenheim, formerly a member of the Senate and orwa of the richest men in the United States, who has been prominently identified in the American coppermining, has announced a preliminary gift of £600,000 for the establishment of a foundation endowing fellowships for advanced study abroad. The comprehensive nature of the foundation will probably make it rank next in importance to the Rhodes scholarships. The foundation is established as a memorial to Mr. Guggenheim's son John, who died in 1922, and it will offer young men and women world-wide opportunities, under the freest possible conditions, to conduct research in any field of knowledge or opportunities for the development of unused talent in any of the fine arts, including music. The ages of (lie scholars must be between 25 and 33 years. The money available for each scholarship wili allow approximately £SOO a year, although more may be advanced. It is interesting to note that Mr. Guggenheim has enlisted the services of Mr. Frank Aydelotte, president of the Swarthmoore College and secretary for the Rhodes trustees in America, and other Rhodes scholars to conduct the foundation. It is specifically mentioned that foundation scholars may pursue their studies in Australia. Mr. Guggenheim has issued a statement pointing out that the purposes of the foundation are to_ supplement the Rhodes foundation. It is intimated that the fellowships will be open to those residing in America, although they need not be American citizens. No exceptions are made on account of race, creed or colour.
