MATCH AGAINST N.S.W. VISITORS 397 FOR THREE. TWO CENTURIES SCORED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. Feb. 22. The second cricket match between the English touring team and New South Wales was commenced in Sydney yesterday morning. There was an attendance of 16,000 spectators. The weather was hot, and there was a cloudless sky. Both the wicket and the outfield were in good order. In the New South Wales team Wells replaced Taylor, who was indisposed. Newman is twelfth man. Tiie English team comprised Giiligan (captain), Chapman, Kilner, WhysalJ, Woolley, Sandham, Hendren, Freeman, Tyldesley, Bryan, Howell and Hearne, twelfth man. Giiligan Wins the Toss. Giiligan won the toss, and elected to bat. He sent Bryan and Sandham in to open the innings. This was Bryan's first appearance in Sjdney. He displayed good judgment. He scored slowly at first, and when he had made 14 runs he gave an easy chance to Kippax, which was not accepted. Tho first 50 appeared on the board after 55 minutes' play. Sandham gave an exhibition of good footwork, Ho frequently turned the bowling to the leg, where he found vacancies on the field. The bowling did not prove very troublesome, but no risks were taken in scoring off Scott, who was not so fast as he usually is. Collins made frequent changes. He employed five bowlers before lunch in the effort to separate the first wicket partners. After lunch Andrews was added to the list of trundlers. When the board showed a total of 136 Kelleway secured Bryan's wicket. The outgoing batsman had been at tho wickets for 121 minutes. He had hit seven fours, and had given an excellent all-round display. The first century had appeared on tho board in 94 minutes. Sandham carried on confidently with Woolley. The latter indulged in some big hits, and play became lively. Many of Wool ley's strokes were prevented from reaching the fence by smart out-fielding. Score Mounts Rapidly. The score mounted rapidly, and the second century appeared after 163 minutes' play. Sandham was now hitting vigorously, and made 50 in as many minutes, including eight fours. The partners were quite at home, and had little difficulty with any of the bowlers, in spite of the fact that Collins tried! practically the whole team with the ball. Scott's deliveries rose awkwardly at times, and occasionally bounced over Woolley's head. Runs came mostly from cuts and glances, and the out-fieldsmen, Kippax and Morgan, had plenty of hunting the leather to do. Sandham. proved an adept on the late cut. On one occasion he sent the ball right between the wicket-keeper's feet. Sandham reached his century in 188 minutes. Woolley took 197 minutes to reach his. The board showed 300 after 22S minutes' play. Collins continued to change the bowling frequently. Sandham and Woolley Dismissed. Sandham batted for 203 minutes, and his partnership of 202 with Woolley lasted 130 minutes. He hit 12 fours and gave a brilliant and chanceless exhibition. He was given a rousing reception on his dismissal. When Woolley was 135, and the total 359, he had a life, Andrews dropping an easy catch. When the total was 375 Woolley stepped out to one from Mailey, and missed it. Ratcliffe snicked his bails off. Ho had batted for 172 minutes, and had hit 17 fours and one six. He was heartily cheered on returning to the pavilion. England's total, when stumps were drawn, was 397 runs for three wickets. Tlie following are the details of the scores:— ENGLAND.—First innings.
