Gloammc had a wonderful reception at Riccarton to-day. Ho was cheered when he entered the birdcage prior to the Middle Park Plate, and again when he went out for his preliminary, while an ovation also greeted him when he came back after his victory. It was a ridiculously easy win. as at no stage did the two-year-olds get away from him, while they were unable to extend the champion over the last half of the journey. The race demonstrated clearly that Gloaming retains his wonderful speed. He was followed home by his two-year-old stablemates. Nincompoop showed more speed than Chignon, and beat her comfortably at the finish, but I would not regard this as conclusive evidence of his superiority, as the colt had an experienced rider, while Chignon was piloted by a youngster. As it was Nincompoop seemed to be tiring a bit at tho end, while Chignon was finishing on well. It is understood that R. J. Mason will take Gloaming. Nincompoop and Chignon to Sydney early next month. Sparklight bolted while doing her preliminary for the Middle Park Plate, and ran about five furlongs at top before being pulled up. It was an unfortunate incident, as it must have affected, her chance of beating Nincompoop and Chignon. She is a very promising filly. Jubilant, who is owned by Mr. lx. Gould, the chairman of tho Canterbury J.C., was on the course with a view to contesting the Midsummer Handicap to-day. Unfortunately, sho had an ettack of. colic, and though not serious it was sufficient to prevent her from racing, the result being that the race was ionfined to three horses. Count Cavour won the Midsummer Handicap very easily, and gained some admirers. The performance of Footfall was very disappointing, as he was hopelessly beaten soon after going a mile. En Route registered an attractive performance in winning the Hornby Handicap. Ho is a speedy customer, who can sprint five furlongs faster than most horses at Riccarton. He only has to jump kindly to win lots of good hurdle races in the winter. Haze, a Demosthenes three-year-old in R. J. Mason's stable, ran a solid, race when just btaten by En Route to-day, and he should soon bo a winner. Gamebay, the winner of the Trial Stakes, is a three-year-old sister to Royal Stag, Moorfowl and Wild Hind, being by Autumnus from the speedy Kirriemuir. Sho is smaller than her relatives and her form prior to this race was disappointing. Today she was always well placed, and she finished well. Victory Bond Bcored a very easy win in the Lyttelton Plate, being in front nearly all the way. On this form the others arc not a good lot. but Philanderer (by Gay Lad— Love-a-Duck) 'will improve a lot yet. He came from a good way back to get second. The two-year-old. Centrepiece. disappointed his connections in the Lyttelton Plate. She showed plenty of speed, but ran about a lot and finished badly. Finora established a New. Zealand record for seven furlongs in winning the Craven Plate at Riccarton to-day. It should be noted that she had the assistance of a strong wind, but it was an attractive par formance, as she led all the way and < i iished on very strongly, giving nothing a chance in the. last furlong. VC inning Hit had his first race since early spring, when he contested the Craven Plate. Ho was well enough placed, at the distance, but tho paco then found him out. Barn Owl, who has been off the scene for a few months, beat a fair field of hacks very decisively in the Halswell Handicap. She showed a lot of speed and ran the journey in good stylo. It is only a question of keepiug her sound and she will win better races before the closo of the sea--B°n. Winkie's Best, who was a great disappointment at the Dunedin meeting, made some amendti in the Post Handicap. He jumped out in. front and made an exhibition of his opuonsntSj staying out the mile very attractively. His ga:meness has been questioned, but possibly the trouble is that lie does not like a hard track. Tarleton's. failure .in the Post Handicap was expensive to his admirers. He wan chopped out at the start, and though he was showing up "at the distance, the effort to make np his lost ground settled him. THE NEWMARKET HANDICAP FATHER'S VOICE SCRATCHED. A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE, Feb. 22. Father's Voice was scratched for the Newmarket Handicap at 4.25 p.in. yesterday. VICTORIAN TRAINING NOTES. A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE. Feb. 21. At Flemington to-day the woather was fine and the going good. On the grass Whittier ran six furlongs in lm 19}s, while Accarak did 13 furlongs in 3m, the last 10 in 2m 14s. The Rove' did a mile in lm 475, and Prince Woorak and Dan ton the same task in lm 4415. Backwood and Bold and Bad did a mile in lm 48s. and All Surprise.
