UNPOPULAR TOLL GATES.
APPEAL FOR ABOLITION. "SUPER TAX" OPPOSED MOTOR UNION RESOLUTION. (.BIT "TELEGRAPH.—OWN' CORRESPONDENT. j NAPIER. Saturday. " That all t-01l gates should bo abolished as at. March 31," was i.he test of a rem it brought before the half-yearly meeting of the North Tslanrl Motor Union, held last evcnjng, by the South Taranaki Automobile Association.. . " This, is a very vital question to us," staled Mr. K. P. Cox (South Taranaki), " and I do not. know whether the people on this side of the island realise how important it, is. Our protest, is based on the principle that we are now being taxed annually toward the upkeep of roads, aud do'not want to pay this super tax. Not one of the local bodies that have' toll gates wants to retain them. If pressure is brought to bear on the Government. by this union it will greatly help ♦he Taranaki district. Where the Main Highways Board has taken over the roads the toll gates certainly do go out." Dr. E. E. Porritt. seconded the remit on behalf of the Wanganui Automobile Association. ' Mr. H. J. Stott (Wellington) pointed out. that. Mr. . J'urkert, chairman of the Main Highways Board, was absolutely in sympathy with the abolition of all toll gates. The board's recommendation had gone on to the Minister and the matter was now in Siis hands. Ho suggested that South Taranaki should add to their remit the words: "If compensation is required by certain councils the Main Highways Board should l>e asked to pay an agreed amount {rpm the general fund."* Mr. Cox agreed to the addition being made to the remit, which on being pat to the meeting was carried unanimously.
