A police witness said that shortly after Riley's death, Morgan, who was arrested in connection with the occurrence, signed a statement to the effect that he had deliberately shot Riley for the sake of his (Morgan's) wife, and family. Medical evidence showed that it would have been impossible for Riley to have been shot from the position originally indicated by Morgan, by a rifle exploding owing to it having fallen against a fence.
