CALL OF THE BLOOD.
CHINESE GIVES FORTUNE. All Yeuti, a Chinese laundvymau of Vancouver city, values his brother beyoiul all temporal wealth, and has proved it dramatically in one of the strangest dilemmas that man can, be called upon to face. Way back in the interior provinces of China, Ycun's brother was travelling with his wife and family. Bandits seized on the cavalcade and bore Venn's relations off into a, mountain fastness. Letters demanding a. ransom of £I6OO readied Ah \ euu. All Yeun, after toiling 20 years to collect a modest fortune, and steadily putting off the day of*his revisit to China on holidays, had that sum almost to a dollar. It was the life of his brother and family in the scales against 20 years of labour and the fortune. .Blood ties held fast. Ah Yeun hesitated not at all. The money was sent to the Chinese bandits. His reward came in November, when the brother, his sister-in-law and 'family arrived in Vancouver to share the remainder of his earthly estate. Ah Venn is now a poor man, but lie is proud of it.
flapped by the flames winch enveloped the staircase, .Mrs. Byass, the wife of the landlord, jumped from a second floor .window and was caught in a sheet by the firemen. "I opened my bedroom door and sawthat the landing outside was blazing, so I banged it, and, running to the wall, hammered on it in un endeavour to wake my parents. "Then I rushed to the window- and called someone to fetch the brigade. The people below shouted to me to go down and let. them in, and 1 shouted back, 'I am trapped. Send for the. fire engines.' "When the firemen came they put the escape up and carried, me down."
