FASTIDIOUS TIGER.

COOLIE SAVED BY BODY OIL. A storv of a tiger with fastidious tastes comes from the Straits Settlements. Two coolies, who were fishing, were surprised by a tiger and took to their heels 'with the tiger in close pursuit. One of the men .'.jot safely away, but the other tripped and fell on the, soft sand, where lie lay, awaiting the attack of the tiger. When' the tiger reached him, instead of mauling him about, it merely sniffed once or twice, pawed the sand that partly covered the man's body, and then ran off. The native, who had escaped met a gang of coolies fishing -on a. raver s bank, and together they returned, expecting to find the second man dead. Their surprise was great when they found him alive and well, and then a forest officer joined them and asked why the tiger had not attacked the coolie. The answer (says a correspondent of the Straits, Times, who tolls the. story) came promptly, that, the tiger objected to the oil with which coolies cover their bodies.
