RANGITOTO ISLAND.
ROAD AROUND THE BASE, SCHEME OF IMPROVEMENTS. ! 14 proposal to improve Rangitoto Island as a scenic resort was mentioned at the meeting of the Devonpori Borough Council last evening. It was suggested that a road should be constructed to! encircle the base, thereby opening up parts of the island which at present aro inaccessible. Ample material is available on the island for road construction, and the principal cost would be the labour. Although the Domain Board has a substantial credit balance, it would not be sufficient to undertake the outlay. The Minister for Justice is to be communicated with asking that a prison camp be established on the island and prison labour used for constructing the road. Several improvements are to be undertaken in the near future. The children's playground is to be extended for about 60ft., and £IOO has been allocated for providing equipment. A small launch landing is to be erected at Islington Bay and the track put in order. It is also proposed to straighten and regrade the track from the wharf np to the water tanks. When this work is carried out there will bo a properly-constructed mac-, adam path for the climb to the summit. Professor J. 0.
