HISTORY OF TROUBLE.
OBJECTION TO NEW AWARD. RECENT UNION MEETINGS. DISSATISFACTION OVER WAGES. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORBESPONPENT. ] WELLING TON. Wednesday. During the past week there have been several indications that trouble was likely to occur on the waterfront at any time. When the Arbitration Court announced that it had granted an increase of one halfpenny an hour to watersiders considerable dissatisfaction was at once expressed by the men throughout New Zealand. and meetings were held in various centres. At these meetings stronglyworded resolutions of protest were carried, and in one or two instances an assurance was given to the executive of tho waterside workers' federation that supportwould be given to any action that was taken to increase the rates of pay of watersiders. In the past week stoppages of work have occurred at Wellington, Lvttelton, Dunedin and Timaru. At Wellington the watersiders have declined to accept labour on the OpaWa, but this morning was the first time that the watersiders declined to work unless extra rates wer< paid. The matter was at once discussed by the employers, and a decision reached as stated above. Watersiders again refused to work the Opawa to-day.
