RACING INNOVATION.

RACES IN TWO DIVISIONS. MACHINE OPENS ONLY ONCE. An innovation in New Zealand racing was the running ab the Rotorua meeting on two occasions, of a race in two divisions although it was regarded as a single event and the totalisator was closed bofore tho runnjng of the first division and not. re-opened until the second was decided. Dividends were paid on. the winners of each heat only and in the same proportion as if the two had dead-heated for first place in a single race. No dividend on second horses was paid. In respect of stakes it is laid down that not less than 75 per cent, of the total .stake for the race shall be paid to the winner of each division. The Racing Club is, therefore, a loser as regards stakes. At Rotorua, however, there was no- choice as there-were more starters in the races than the safety limits fixed. The Gaming Amendment Act, 1924, prescribes that the totalisator shall not be opened for more than eight races on any one day's racing. As the Rotorua programme already contained eight races, it was therefore illegal to open the totalisator twice for the two divisions of the Electric Handicap.
