EWES FOR THE WAIKATO.
LARGE MOB FROM GISBORNE ARRIVAL AT CAMBRIDGE. [BY telegraph.—-own correspondent.] CAMBRIDGE. Wednesday. A notable sheep drove terminated at Cambridge to-day. On Jannary 14 four drovers started from a station in the vicinity of Gisborne with a mob of 3700 Romney ewes, and they have been on the ■road ever since. Coming through tho Motu Gorge, where tho road for most of the distance winds round the face of tremendous precipices, the mob was strung out a great distance, and even tho drovers, who belong to a class not given to enthusing over sights common to themselves, were inclined to drop their habitual reticence over tho picture presented by the sheep in the narrow defile. Only on one occasion did the drovers fail to reach yards or paddocks in which to put the sheep .for the night. On that occasion the mob was driven into a hollow and the dogs, numbering well over a score, wero tied around it, the drovers taking turns at sentry go. The mob was divided at Tirati yesterday, and the first half reached the Cambridge yards this afternoon. The sheep, mostly five-year ewes, are in good condition, clearly demonstrating the skill with which they have been brought over. A mob of the present size usually reaches the Waikato from the Gisborne district at least once a summer. After their arrival they are bred from once and then fattened. The mob is from one station and represents one purchase.
