STOLEN RING AND BROOCH, PROBATION AND PROHIBITION. [BY TELKOHATK. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON. Wednesday. The theft of a gold ring and brooch and a felt bat was charged against a middle-aged man, Herbert William Stephen Pearson, alias Bert. Williams (Sir. Tompkins), in the Hamilton Court today. Accused pleaded guilty in respect of the ring and brood), 'nit- not guilty regarding the hat. Senior-Sergeant Matbew said the ring and brooch were left- by the owner in her room at the Waikato Hotel. Accused vent to pawn them, and was told to come back in an hour. He did so, only to find a constable awaiting him. He was wearing the hat of a. fellow boarder. With regard to the hat, accused said he. con Id not, find his own, and as ho was in a hurry ho borrowed that of his roommate. He must have taken the other articles "while he was drunk, as fie found t.hem in his possession the following day and concluded that ho had purchased them while under the influence, of liquor. The magistrate admitted accused to probation for two years. Pearson was ordered to take out a prohibition order against himself, and to pay witnesses' expenses, £l. On a further charge of theft at Hunter\HTle in 1916, the man was remanded to appear there.
