CAR OVER A CLIFF.
RECORD BREAKERS' MISHAP. REMARKABLE ESCAPE. While attempting to break a record and while travelling at a terrific speed, two young motorists crashed through the retaining fence of the Vauxhall Bridge at Granville recently and toppled over a cliff. The police state that the car, at the time of the accident, had attained a remarkable speed. The two motorists escaped with a few minor injuries. According to the report submitted by the police, Harold R. Jndd and Leslie Hyde were making an attempt to lower time records between Sydney and Newcastle. On the approach to the Vauxhall Bridge they were suddenly alarmed to catch a glimpse of the railings of the bridge ahead, which they had not thought to be so close. There is a sharp turn at the bridge entrance, and it seemed impossible to negotiate this at the pace they were travelling. The brakes, the report continues, were jammed on, but failed to act effectively, and. the motorists, failing to turn the curve, shot across the road, tore through the railings and pitched over a very high cliff. The car somersaulted in mid-air and both young rron were thrown out, unnerved, but suffering little injury.
