ST. HELIERS BAY NOTES.

VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE. | CONSTRUCTION OF SEAWALL. I j Si. Heliers Bay has a- very enthusiastic | fire brigade, which serves the whole of | the, Tamaki Road Board's area. 'J he bri- | gade is sending a team away to the conj ferenre and demonstration in ' brist- | church. The brigade has an up-to-date | motor, but is somewhat short- of equipjrnenf. This deficiency will no doubt be | supplied by the Road Board in the near | future. At present the motor engine is i housed in a somewhat primitive garage ! at, the rear of the board's offices. In the | plans for the new municipal offices at j St. Heliers, however, provision is made j for an up-to-date fire station. The motor j engine was paid for by the brigade itself, j out of the proceeds of a very successful carnival, with the addition of a small sum provided by the Road Board. There J are. 15 members of the brigade at present, I the superintendent being Mr. T. Scott, who formerly filled a similar position with the Ellerslie brigade. In the past noxious weeds have been very evident in the Tamaki district, but the Road Board is now waging an active campaign for their eradication. Tll con sequence there is already a marked improvement in this direction, i Rapid progress continues to be made j with the construction of the new sea wall !at St. Heliers Bay. The remarkable im- | provement this will make to the water- | front is already apparent. The erection | of the new bathing sheds will also he a very valuable addition, and the sheds will fill a long-felt want. The improvements should result in a large increase in the number of visitors to the bay next summer. Many new dwellings are being erected in the district. It is estimated that approximately 400 houses have been built in the Tauiaki Road Board's area in the last four years. They chiefly represent a good class of workers' bungalow, of from four to five rooms. Since November, 1922, 1 a total of 222 building permits have been j issued by the board, the majority being | for dwellings, additions to dwellings, and I motor garages.
