ANNOYING A POLICEMAN.
MAORIS AT WHAKATANE. UNIFORM DEMANDS RESPECT. [BY TELEGRAPH.—( )WN CORRESPONDENT. ] WHAKATANE. Friday. A lialf-castc was charged at Whakatane with obstructing Constable Clist in the execution of his duty. Constable Clist had been questioning a native to gather some information when the accused came along and told the native not to answer any questions as the constable was "a big bluff." The constable said that accused was always creating trouble, having the idea that he was a rangatira among the Maoris. . Another native was charged with throwing a half-eaten plum at tho constable, damaging his uniform. A native woman gave evidence that the accused was eating a plum when the constable entered a restaurant. As soon as the constable's back was turned the accused deliberately took the plum out of his mouth and threw it at the constable. Constable Clist said it cost 7s 6d to have the uniform cleaned, and the magistrate, with a remark that the "uniform" must'be respected, imposed a fine of £1 and costs, and ordered payment of the damage.
