ALLEGED BOOKMAKING.
CHARGES AT NELSON. TWO MEN SENT FOR TRIAL. [I!Y TELEGRAPH. —PUESS ASSOCIATION. 3 NELSON. Wednesday. William Herbert Moxey appeared on remand at the Magistrate's Court to-day, before Messrs. A. Gould and W. Stewart, J.P.'s, charged with carrying on the occupation of bookmaking on January 19. Evidence was given by a police pro. bationer as to having made bets with accused, using marked (money. The police evidence concerning the raiding of the premises was to the effect that certain of the marked money was recovered, and that accused endeavoured to put what the police believed to be betting accounts in his mouth. Tho police pulled his hand away and recovered the accounts. Accused, who pleaded not, guilty, reserved his defence, and was committed for trial, bail being allowed. Maurice Vivian Maxwell was charged with carrying on tho occupation of' a bookmaker on December 31 The police probationer, in his evidence, stated that lie received a cheque through the post, signed "Vivian Maxwell." It was in payment of dividends on horses he had backed in connection with Moxey. Witness said he had asked accused if he could make bets on two horses .engaged in tho Wairarapa race meeting. Accused said, "Give them to Moxey; he is my agent." Accused pleaded not, guilty, and reserved his defence. He was committed for trial, bail being allowed.
