BOOKMAKER FINED.
PENALTIES TOTAL £3O. " MEDIUM WAY OF BUSINESS." Fines amounting t-o £3O wore inflicted on a middle-aged man, David Jones, by Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., and Mr. J. Smith, J.P., in tho Police Court yesterday on two charges of laying totalisator odds -on the Nursery and Wallaceville Handicaps, run at Trentham on January 22 and 23. Chief-Detective Cummings described accused as a man in only a medium way of business, against whom nothing previously was known. The two 10s bets were made on races at Trentham. Accused always paid 20s in the £. Mr. Singer,"for accused, mentioned that this was his first offence, and he had never previously been before tho Court on any charge. Allegations that accused had unlawfully carried on tho business of a bookmaker at Otahuhu on January 22 and a further charge of laying totalisator odds were withdrawn by Mr. Cummings. On one charge a penalty of £2O and 7s costs was imposed and on the other, £lO and 7s costs.
