WRITING.
Sir, —When public bodies arc protesting against the manner in which penmanship is neglected in oar schools, it is manifest that some serious defect exists in our tjducationai system, The explanation is so simple that it is wonderful it has remained so long undetected by the "watchdogs of the department." A boy is taught text hand by one teacher and print script by another until his caligraphy is irretrievably injured He then proceeds to a secondary school, where to teach so elementary a subject as writing would be considered infra dignitatem, and he is there allow-ed to develop an illegible scribble by means of the practice facetiously termed "taking notes." It .is for parents to decide whether some improvement cannot be effected, as it is utterly useless for boys whose writing is almost undecipherable to apply for clerical positions. " B.A.
