The Ngakuta shifted to the King's Vi. harf yesterday morning to complete discharge of her cargo of coal. She sailed last night for Greymonth. The Wingatui, en route from Southern ports, was to learn Lyttelton yesterday for Wellington and Auckland. The vessel is now due here about Friday. The Wan&ka and Herikino -will come out of dock this morning when the Wanaka will return to her berth at the Western Wharf to continue her overhaul. The Herekino will berth at the end of the Prince's Wharf u. be fitted up as a flagship for Thursday's Regatta., The Union Company's chartered steamer Trerneadow in expected to leave Nauru Island at any time now with a cargo of phosphates for Auckland. TAHITI IN PORT. An arrival in port yesterday was the Royal Mail steamer Tahiti, from Wellington. The vessel Ms replacing the Makura on the Vancouver service for one trip to Canada. Afterwards the Tahiti will proceed from Vancouver to San Francisco, where fibs will resume in her former service. The Southern Sum from Vancouver to Auckland will ho taken by the new oil liner Aorangi. which leaves Vancouver on her initial trip in the service on February G. The Tahiti is making her reappearance at Auckland after an absence of .some years. She has had an interesting career. The vessel was formerly named tne Port Kingston. She was built by A. Stephen and Sons, Glasgow, in 1904, for Elder Dempster and Company. who ran the vese«>s for eome lime in the West India mail service. In 1911 she was purchased by the Union Company, who re-named her the Tahiti. When the war broke out the Tahiti was the -first vessel to be taken over by the New Zealand Government as a troopship. The Tahiti wm one of the convoy that took the Main Body -roops to Egypt. Afterwards the vessel was loaned to the American Government, which utilised her for carrying American t'ocps. After the Armistice the Tahiti was transferred back to the New Zealand Government, and she was then engaged in bringing troops back to the Dominion. With a large number of soldiers on board, the Tahiti arrived at Auckland from England on July 4. 1919. The following year the vessel was converted at San Francisco into an oil- j burner.

Now that the Aorangi has been added to the fleet, the Tahiti is tho fourth largest passenger steamer oi.-r.cd by the company, her tonnage being only 177 less than the Makura. The Tahiti is generally classed as one of the test steamere of the fleet. When necessary she can easily steam IS§ knots. Her passenger quarters are epaciaus. and well furnished. She has accommodation for 160 saloon, 120 second and 80 third-Jass. All the first-class passengers can Jine at one sitting, as the dining-room has seating accommodation for 164 and the gecord-flses for 84. The crew all told number' 143, of whom 85 are stewards. The Nobel _ Explosive Company's topsail schooner Im. _ after lightering explosives yesterday morning from the steamer West Calera, sailed last evening for Whangarei to load a cargo of timber for Sydney. KUROW FOR NEWCASTLE. The Kurow moved to Chelsea yesterday morning to complete discharge of her cargo of coat, the vessel will be despatched this evening to Newcastle and is taking an Australian mail. THE MAHENO. The Union Company's inter-Colonial steamer Maheno is due at Wellington this morning with passengers, mails and cargo from Sydney. MARAMA AT SYDNEY. The Union Company's intercolonial steamer Marama arrived at Sydney from Weiliaßtoxi at 7 a.m. yesterday. Tho vessel is scheduled to leave Sydney on Friday morntng with passengers, mails and cajgo for Auckland, where she is duo on Tuesday. MAHIA LEAVES BRISBANE. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Line steamer Mahia sailed from Brisbane yesterday for Wansanui. where she will commence loading in New Zealand. MATOPPO LEAVES NEW YORK. The New Zealand Shipping Company has received advice that the A. and A. Line's chartered steamer Matoppo sailed from New York on January 17 with a cargo for discharge at Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Australia. She is due at Auckland about February, 15. MACHINERY FOR NEW GUINEA. The largo scow Ziniiarra arrived at Hokianga on Saturday and afterwards went to Raweno to load the machinery from a dismantled sawmill there. The cargo wili be tak&n to Russell, where it will be transhipped to trio Burns, Philp steamer Makamtio, which is Calling at tho Bay of Islands port rett week to take tho machinery to New Guinea. WEST CALERA BERTHED. The Swayne Hoyto Line steamer West Calera, which arrived from Sail Francisco os Sunday afternoon and anchored in the stream to discharge a small Quantity of explosives, was berthed at the Prince's Wnarf yesterday mom ins: to unload about ISOO tons of lumber, case oil and general cargo for this port. The vessel will sail the end of tho week for Lyttelton, Dunedin, Melbourne and Sydney to complete discharge. The rates of excha-s!:e on the cargo are:—Canada. 4.73 dollars; United State, 4.73 dollars. PORT ALBANY AT OPUA. The Commonwealth and Dominion Line steamer Port Albany arrived at Opua from Australia at 6.50 a.m. yesterday. After loading frozen meat and general cargo at the Bajj of Islands port the steamer is to leave there this evening for Auckland, where she is dun to-morrow morning. More cargo will be_ loaded at this port and the vessel will then proceed to Wnikokopu, Napier and Lyttelton to complete. She will be despatched finally from Lyttelton for London on February 15. RIMUTAKA POSTPONED. The New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Rimntaka has bjen further delayed in loading at Gisborue, The vessel is to leave there to-morrow for Auckland, where she is due on Thursday. At Auckland the Rimutaka will complete loading and she will also embark passengers at this _ port. In consequence of the delay the vessel's departure for New York, Boston and West of England ports has been postponed until daybreak on Tuesday. February 3. CORNWALL DUE AT 4 A.M. TO-DAY. The Federal Line stearoer Cornwall, en route from Liverpool to Auckland, has reported by wiridess that she will arrive at 4 a.m. to-dav. The vessel will berth at the Prince' 3 Wharf to discharge a quantity of general merchandise from Great Britain ports. She is due at this port about The West Cahokia will be followed by the West Islip, which is to leave San I' rancisco on February 25 for Auckland, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Australia. She is due here about Maxell 23 THE RADNOR AND TREWYN. A wireless message from the steamer Radnor states that _ she will arrive at Auckland tbiis morning. WARSHIPS' FIRING PRACTICE. H M S. Dunedin is to leave port this afterroon for the Hauraki Gulf where she will join H M.S. Lab or num. Tne two warships S r e to carry out ten days' gunnery exercise and firing practice in the Gulf. The acting captain of the squadron advises that tne following firing practice will take place, weather permitting:—.January 29 clay and night, 3-pounder practice; 3-pounder, highangle practice; star shell firing at. night; February 3: Day practice, Gin. and 4m. and 3in high-angle practices; February 5: Day and night, 6ia. practice; day, 4m. and 3m. high-angle practices; star shell firing at night TO FT A ARRIVED. The Union Company's Island steamer Tofua arrived at 10 a.m. yesterday from Samoa. Tonga ai d Fiji. After medical inspection in the stream the vessel berthed at the Queen's Wharf to land passengers and a cargo of 18,000 cases of bananas, aa well as 1200 watermelons and a quantity of other Island produce. Tha Tofua's trip round the Islands is reported to have been uneventful. Good weather prevailed until the vessel was nearinjr the New Zealand coast at 11 P.m. on Sunday, when a thick fog was encountered, necessitating a stop fot about four hours. This delayed her arrival at Auckland. The Tofua is scheduled to leave for the Islands again at 11 a.m. on Saturday. ARAHURA DELATED. The Arahura arrived from East Coast ports shortly after mid-day yesterday and berthed at the Prince's Wharf. The vessel should have reached Auckland on Sunday moraing. but was delayed on the coast by bad weather. Leaving Auckland on Tuesday night the 'Arahura arrived at Gisborne the next evening. A strong south-east wind and rough seas prevented the vessel discharging cargo at that port until Friday. Site then proceeded to Napier, which port was worked on Saturday, and the same evening she loft for Gisborne. Passengers were transtferred at Gisborne on Sunday morning and tho Arahura left for Auckland at G. 30 a.m. Strong north-east winds and roush seas were encountered to the Hauraki Gulf and delayed the progress of the vessel. In consequence she was about fivo hours longer on the trip than, she would have been under normal conditions. At S p.m. to-day the Arahura will sail on her return trip to Tokomaru Bay.
