A DRUNKEN MOTORIST.
CONTRACTOR SENT TO GAOL.
TWO DAYS' IMPRISONMENT.
SEQUEL TO A COLLISION.
Two clays' imprisonment was imposed on a married man, George Frederick Robinson, aged 45, by Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., in the Police Court on Saturday, on a charge of having been drunk while in charge of a motor-car in Symonds Street on Friday. Sergeant Rowell said accused collided with another car at the junction of Karangahape Road and Symonds Street, and Constable Allen arrested him on a charge of drunkenness. A bottle of wine was lying on the seat besido accused, who was totally unfit to be in charge of the vehicle. This was the first occasion on j which he had been charged with drunken- j ness, but his record showed' that he was not particularly safe even when sober. Mr. Waddingham, counsel for accused, asked for leniency. Accused, he said, was a building contractor employing four men. He had visited counsel's'office on Friday on a business matter, but he was not. well and left without completing it. Mr. Poynton remarked that accused was certainly not the class of man to have a driver's license. He had six previous convictions for breaches of tlyej traffic by-laws. H« could not be let off. He would be sent to gaol for two days, and would thus be released before Christmas. A recommendation would be made for the cancellation of his license.
