MR. JUSTICE OSTLER.
In filling the vacancy on the Supreme Court bench, the authorities have selected one of the leading members of the Auckland Bar. Though an Aucldander only by adoption. and comparatively recent adoption, Mr. H. H. Ostler has impressed his personality thoroughly upon the legal community of the city, and has become well known to citizens generally. The record of his professional careei shows an extensive range of experience with a striking degree of success in all he has attempted. The importance of that as quelific.ition foi the position to which he has been called is a point which need not be laboured. There is another aspect to be considered as well. It is evident from even a brief biography that he has lived a full life, gaining an intimate knowledge of men and institutions, and the wide outlook derived from travel. A Judge of the Supreme Court is riot solely engaged in interpreting the law and unravelling legal tangles. He has to deal extensively with people of diverse kinds, to enter into the minds of men and to allow for the infinite vagaries of human nature. To this branch of his duties Mr. Justice Ostler sh Mild come well equipped. His achievements as a lawyer, I:is record as t citizen, and his personal qualities have undoubtedly been the determining factors in his selection. The new appointment is one which ran be expected to give satisfaction to the legal profession, with whom the most direct interest lies, and to the community generally.
