[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN COUItESPONDENT. ]
WHANGAREI. Wednesday.
The combined tender of tlie Whangarei cricket and hockey associations for the lease of about 23 acres of reclaimed land below the rowing club's sheds has been accepted by the Whangarei Harbour Board. After the expiration of tho two years allowed for experimental purposes tlw rental will rise every quinquenniaJ period from £10 to £20 to £40, the balance of the period being at £50 a year. The area is level reclaimed mangrove flat, and experiments show that proper and patient treatment brings it into good grass.
"When a controversy arose some time ago concerning tho location of the goods shed on the new Parua Bay Wharf at the shore or seaward end, 'the settlers affected asked tho Whangarei Harbour Board to defer a decision until it was ascertained whether (ho Northern Steamship Company would reduce the freight charges. Considerable interchange of correspondence ensued, resulting in the board's engineer being able to announce to-day that the company had issued a tariff considerably lower 'than that cited by tho settlers. The outcome was that tho Parua Bay people had agreed to the shed being built on tho outer end of the wharf. Tho work entailed will bo completed in a few days, and an official opening of the new wharf has been arranged.
