FIRE AND EXPLOSIONS.
INDIAN OCEAN TRAGEDY.
SEVERAL PERSONS MISSING.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received 9.3r> p.m.) A. and X Z. LONDON. Dec. S. A message from Port Louis. Mauritius, gives thrilling , details of a fire on the small steamer Cigale.
The outbreak originated in the hold, and explosions followed which blew up several of the passengers and caused a panic. During the confusion other passengers jumped into the sea. Captain Berenger had hardly restored order and <jot the fire under control before (lie boiler exploded. Only one lifeboat was intact when the order was given to abandon the' ship.
The women and children aboard were placed in this boat and rowed to Saint Denis, on (lie island of Reunion.
Seventeen other passengers and some of the crew jumped on to the captain's raft. They were rescued later.
Twenty-three persons who embarked on another raft r»re still missing.
The C'igale was a 510-ton iron screw steamer owned by La Cigale, Ltd., of Port Louis. She was built in 1886 by .Messrs. Cochrane, Cooper, and Schofield, of Beverley.
