NEW POWER BOARD.

WAITEMATA NOMINATIONS.

POLL PROBABLY NECESSARY.

It has been the hope of the local bodies in the district over which the Waitemata Electric Power Board will operate that the first board should be elected without the expense of a poll. For this there was a reason, namely, that it seems likely— though the terms of the Act that governs the matter are somewhat equivocal—that another board will have to be elected in April, simultaneously with the general municipal elections.

When fully constituted, the board will comprise representatives of three constituencies: (1) The Waitemata County and the Helensville Town District, which will return four members; (2) the combined boroughs of Takapuna, Birkenhead, and Northcote, four members; and (3) the Henderson and Glen Eden Town Districts, one member.

As regards the three combined North Shore municipalities, the local bodies have agreed, among them, upon the nomination of Mr. J. W. Hayden, Mayor, and Mr. E. M. Thompson, councillor, to represent Takapuna, Mr. W. E. Richardson, Mayor, for Northcote, and Mr. E. C. Walton, Mayor, for Birkenhead. Unless then, some individual ratepayers were also nominated the necessity of a poll would be obviated. As, however, Mr. A. E. Greenslade, an ex-Mayor of Northcote, has promised a deputation that ho will become a candidate, and other competitors are also spoken of, it seems that a poll will be unavoidable. Upon the present population basis, the preponderance in the voting power of the combined district lies in Takapuna. The list of nominations will close to-morrow.

Mr. West, chairman of the Glen Eden Town Board, has been appointed official candidate for the combined Glen Eden and Henderson seat.
