TRADE WITH THE EAST.
GREAT POSSIBILITIES.
REFRIGERATED BOATS NEEDED.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
WELLINGTON. Tuesday.
" There are big possibilities of trade with the East in first-class New Zealand food supplies if a sufficient volume of business can be done to warrant the regular running of steamers equipped with refrigerated space." Such is the opinion of Mr. G. V. Peai'ce, the well-known sheep and cattle .farmer of Kakaramea, who returned by the Tahiti from a nine months' tour of the world.
Mr. Pearce stated that lie left New Zealand in February and went from Sydney through the Malay States, Singapore, the Philippine Islands, Hongkong, and China. He motored for 500 miles through the Malay States. " I interviewed a frend of mine, a shipowner, at. ..Hongkong," said Mr. Pearce, " and lie promised that he would come down to 'New Zealand and see if it would be possible to put a direct refrigerated steamer on to ply between the East and the Dominion. 1 have no doubt that this would be possible as these Eastern countries are at present in a very flourishing condition financially, especially • Hongkong.'-'
