SWIMMING.
STATUS AS AN AMATEUR.
MOTOR-CYCLE RACER'S CASE.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
WANGANUI. Monday. Three or four years .ago the Wanganui centre did its best 'to have ClaringbolcJ, of Hawera, who was disqualified because lie was a cash rider in motor-cycle races, reinstated as an amateur swimmer. The council, however, was adamant, and (ho condition was laid down that if Glaringbold wished to bo reinstated be would have to give up motor-cycling for money. Just lately the questiou was reopened by tho Taranaki centre, and after being 1 again discussed by tho council, it was decided that the international federation should be consulted by cablegram. .It is understood that a cabled reply has now been received, intimating that tho disqualification should be removed, and that motor-cycle riding will not in future be a barrier to amateur swimming. This, if correct, is very satisfactory news, as it gives back to swimming ono of tho best performers this coast has seen. A few years ago Claringbold was tho speediest sprinter along the coast, and ho is credited with cutting out 100 yards in 61s. If Claringbold can get back to form ho and Dowsett should mako two fine representatives from this coasi at the Now Zealand championships to be hold at Christchurch in February. Dowsett is swimming well, and if he keeps up to form his prospects for tho 100 yards are very bright. „
