DIAGRAM OF THE WESTERN WHARF.
The diagram is portion of a sketch attached to the report by Messrs. Williams and Furkerl " showing tendency to deformation under stresses acting and results of such stresses." There is a note on the original that the deformation is exaggerated for clearness. The drawing represents a typical cross-section, illustrating the formation of the sea-bed after dredging into " benches," upon which, after the piles had been driven, a rubble mound was formed, with its top about 12 feet wide, its shape being shown in outline. On the top of this rubble mound is shown a gravity retaining wall of loose random rubble on the part now standing (concrete on the wrecked part). Between this wall and a similar wall 011 the top of the tide deflector, to the westward, was a space which had been partly filled to form a roadway; spoil was being tipped behind the outer end of the wharf when failure occurred. The commission's conclusion is that settlement of the rubble structure downwards and outwards and yielding of the gravity wall to the pressure behind it, imposed stresses on the wharf, which it was unable to bear,
