"YOU'RE A LIAR."
COUNCIL MEETING SCENE.
TROUBLE OVER NAMING PARK.
There was a lively scene of 30 minutes' duration at a meeting of the Borough Council at Btirwood, Sydney, last week, following upon a proposal by Alderman Williams that the council name a new park area after the Mayor (Alderman Blair). Mr. Williams said that ho was prompted by the long public service of the Mayor. Alderman Royce declared that the council had no moral right to glorify the name of any alderman in this fashion. Ho protested that as the park was in Croydon — and, incidentally, in Ins own ward—the residents thereabouts should have the privilege of giving it a name Jubilee Park for preference. Aldermen Whipp and Simpson joined forces with Mr. Royce when he submitted an amendment that the park be named '"Jubilee Park." A remark by Alderman Williams that Mr. Royce did not appear to know what he wanted caused the latter to charge Mr. Williams with canvassing in an effort to succeed eventually to the mayoral chair. Mr. Williams: ''You're a liar!" Both aldermen were on their feet, exchanging heated words, and the Mayor appealed to Mr. Williams to "try to keep cool." Finally Mr. Williams' motion to have (he park called "Blair Park" was carried. Not to be outwitted, however, Messrs. Whipp, Simpson and Williams gave notice that the motion be rescinded. Meanwhile the park remains unchristsued and the Mayor unhonourod.
