EVICTION ORDER REFUSED.
COUNTY COUNCIL'S TENANT. An cjcctment order against a man living with his wife and six children in two rooms at Rotherhitho was sought by the London County Council at Soutlnvark in October. " I have ordered inquiries into the circumstances of the family," said Judge Sir Thomas Granger. " The council has somewhat harshly treated these people." The wife said she had applied four times to the council authorities for transfer to a larger flat. There had been flats of three rooms to let, but they had been given to people with no children. A woman in another flat offered to exchange, but the council would not allow it. The council representative said the woman had been served with several notices to quit, and was now three weeks in arrear with her rent. The Judge: I think she has done very well in the circumstances. No doubt the council has a right to give preference to good tenants who regularly pay the rent. I will pay the arrears from • the poor-box, but I refuse to turn these i people out. '
