ROWING.
TO-DAY'S TRIAL FOURS.
FIVE CLUBS' PROGRAMMES.
The fire local rowing clubs have arranged trial four racing for this afternoon and only good water conditions are required to ensure success. The West End and St. George clubs will each hold an At Home," so an added attraction is offered at the Western and Eastern suburbs clubs.
West End will row for the president's (Mr. J. Peacock) trophies, and in the 12 crews entered the winners are well concealed. The early selection of crews has enabled training to be indulged in, and with tho form thus gained some spirited dicing should be witnessed. The programme is a long one, and members are requested to be at the boat-house early. 1 St. Grorgo will compete lor the silver cup presented by the patron, Sir Jamas Ooates. Seven crews have been selected, necessitating three heats and a final. Members are advised to note the time of starting, to enable the races to he completed. Another race, of special interest. is the Veterans " and the old-timers promise to turn out in force. Special trips will bo provided for the ladies. By the untimely death of Mr J F Lowry, the West End Club, in particular', and Auckland rowing loses one of its warmest supporters. Introduced to the spor; through the City Club in the old whajeboat days, he next, threw in his lot with the West End Rowing Club, and for the last 39 years he had taken an active part in rowing. To the West End Club he was especially endeared, and some years ago, in recognition of his services, he was elected a life member. Ho never sought honours, and was contented in club management as a committeeman. He was, however, a real worker, and no other proof of his sincere work is required than tho reconstruction of the West End shed after the destructive cyclone of 1918. His one aim was to have the rowing homo in order when the " boys " came back from the front.
The various regatta crews are taking advantage of every opportunity for training, and in the three regattas during the Christmas and New Year holiday season, good donations are offering. The revival of the Russell Regatta on Monday, December 29, should attract good entries. In the eight races the donations total £82. Club secretaries should note that entries close on December 16. The Whangarei Regatta will be held on New Year's Day. There are also eight races on this programme, and the donations amount to £64.
