SENTENCED FOR CRIME.
PRISONERS AT HAMILTON.

HAMILTON. Friday.
Two prisoners came up for sentence bofore Mr. Justice Herdman in the Supreme Court at Hamilton this morning. William -Augustus Callaghan (Mr. C. L. MauDiarmid), on a charge of indecent assault cm a male at Hotorua, was sentenced to 18 months' reformative detention. His Honor taking into account accused's age (58), and the fact that lie had previously been of good character. James Merrick (Mr. Seymour), whe had been Found guilty of an indecent offence against a five-year-old boy. was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment with hard labour, to be followed by not more than five years' reformative detention. His Honor raid that the case was one which could be distinguished from those which had previously come before the Court. Accused had lived in an unsatisfactory environment for some years. The police report was no! entirely satisfactory, but no evidence had been brought to show that iiecMSpri had been in the habit of practising the offence, and it was possible that he had been under the influence of liquor at the time.
