POLICE PROMOTIONS.

BUB-INSPECTOR'S SUCCESSOR

SENIOR-SERGEANT RAWLE.

EXPERIENCE AS DETECTIVE.

[BY TECEGHArn. —PIIESS ASSOCIATION.]

WELLINGTON. Friday.

Following upon the transfer of SubInspector Bird from Auckland to Invercargill, with the rank of inspector, SeniorSergeant Rawle, of Auckland, succeeds Sub-Inspector Bird, and Sergeant Edwards, of Hamilton, has been appointed senior-sergeant at Auckland.

Sub-Inspector Rawle will havo seen 25 rears' . service in the force in February. The first 20 years of that period were spent in the detective force, which he abandoned in March, 1920, in favour of the uniform branch. Joining the service as a detective in 1900, Mr. Rawle was stationed first in Dunedin, being transferred to Wellington in the following year. In 1908 he proceeded to Gisborne, in 1910 back to Wellington, in 1920 to Grcvmouth, and in January, 1921, to Auckland. During his long term as detective, Mr. Rawle was personally connected with a great many noteworthy criminal cases. Among the many cases in which ho effected arrests leading to isuccessful prosecutions was a £300 jewellery burglary in the Manawatu district in 1901, cargo-broaching cases on the steamer Paparoa at Wellington, and the Pakarae attempted-murder case of the same year, and the Oriental Bay jewellery theft of 1904. In 1908 he was responsible for the arrest of the three men concerned in the case of burglary under arms at Waerenga-a-hika, while in 1915 he arrested the Ruahine murderer, Rotti man, in the bush at Te Kamera Bay. Rottman was hanged for the murder of Mr. and Mrs. Cann and their infant. In the same year he arrested in Wellington the two men concerned in the theft and fire on the steamer Corinthic. _ A case which presented unusual difficulties, which were eventually solved, was that in which a man forged to a will the name of a, person who had died six months previously. While in Wellington he had charge of the case of alleged conspiracy to defraud bookmakers of £1000. In Auckland, where he has held the position of senior-sergeant, Mr. Rawle has conducted all prosecutions for the police department, and several other Government departments, and has earned a name for capability, impartiality, and courtesy. His experience in the detective branch of the service has undoubtedly stood him in very good stead.
