BATHERS IN TROUBLE.
SOME NARROW ESCAPES.
RESCUE OF A SCHOOLBOY.
Two more bathing accidents occurred at North Beach, New Brighton, near Christchurch, on Tuesday, when the tide was coming in and when a north-west breeze was blowing. The first mishap took place about four o'clock. Two schoolboys, Aubrey Richards and Robert Halliday, were swimming when they got into difficulties in the channel. They were observed by two bathers, Mr. Fowke and another. These two went out to the boys, one taking with him a petrol tin. Meanwhile ono of tho boys managed to get ashore, and the petrol tin was given to the other lad. The local schoolmaster. Mr. S. J. L. Scott, then swam out partly dressed with the line and brought the boy ashore, tho latter having retained his presence of mind and hung on to the tin. Neither of the lads suffered any ill-effects from his narrow escape. About six o'clock Mr. A. C. Rowlands; of North Beach, was swimming off Fleming Street, when he got into tho channel. Tho alarm was given at tho Surf Club pavilion, and a number of the members responded, bringing Mr. Rowlands ashore. It was a coincidence that Mr. Rowlands was one of those who assisted with the lino in the afternoon when the schoolboy was rescued.
