(Received 5.5 p.m.) A. arir" N.Z. LONDON. Nov. 27. PJn(.;'t<ind was to-day swept by a gale with a velocity of 60 miles. It caused much damage and terrific seas in the Channel. The small steamer, Hartley, had her hatches burst and sank. The whole of her crew except two were drowned. The Channel steamer, Dieppe, was stranded in the darkness inside Ncwhaven breakwater. A tug which was going to her assistance foundered. The crew were rescued.

The Dieppe's 65 passengers were rescued later.

The steam drifter, Presholme, was driven aohore on the precipitous coast at Port Lethen. She broke up in 10 minutes. Five of her crew were drowned.

Three others took refuge on a waveswept rock and were heroically rescued by a fisherman named Craig, aged 72.

The brave old man leaped from rock to rock with a line and hauled the castaways to safety.

Many small craft were in peril during the storm. There were numerous thrilling lifeboat rescues.
