ONEHUNGA CARNIVAL.

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION.

INTERESTING COMPETITIONS.

The Onehunga carnival, organised by the Onehunga Chamber of Commerce, which was held yesterday, was carried out very successfully. A record crowd filled both the main streets and the footpaths last evening, all utterly oblivious to such considerations as the rule of the road. Five bands and two concert parties enlivened the proceedings. The judges had some difficulty in awarding the prizes for the best decorated windows. They eventually gave a tie for first place to the Auckland Meat Company, T. W. Smith, and J. Lomas, while the following were very highly commended: Messrs. J. K. Ross, W. S. Moore, A. E. Jupp, G. A. Randall, Auckland Gas Company, L. Charters, H. W. Hulett, T. Wolfenden, and C. Gilbert.

A special'competition was held for the best fancy costume for advertising a business, and first award was given to Mrs. Kilgour, G. A. Randall and Mrs. Edwards being a tie iov. second. A special prize for the best decorated vehicle was awarded to Mr. G. A. Randall, but this was not by any means the only excitement on wheels, numerous more or less artistically decorated vehicles parading the street, with the usual crowd of songsters and clowns to amuse the crowd.

In the afternoon the small boys paraded the whole length of the street with decorated trolleys, and the judges awarded first prize to Noel Hewitt, second to Reg. Laing, and third to Tom Smith, the following being very highly commended: H. Vi'ckery, K. Ferguson, and Jack Ferguson. The proceedings closed with an admirable fireworks display for an hour, on the beach reserve, conducted by the Colonial Ammunition Company, but the crowds were reluctant to disperse, and filled the streets for another hour.
