LONDON MEAT PRICES
ADVANCE LARGELY SEASONAL
AUSTRALIANS WELCOME INQUIRY
A. and N.Z. LONDON. Nov. 20. Amid the welter of the controversy over meat prices, the fact is generally emerging that the present enhancement of values is largely seasonal, arising from supply and demand. Some retailers give detailed figures showing that their profit last week was 12£ per cent, whereas 16 per cent, is needed to show a margin over handling charges, but in numerous cases the profits were much higher. Mr. Hassan, the Australian expert, said he welcomed the inquiry by a commission, and asserted that it could only reveal that Australian producers were in no way blameworthy. Whatever remedy was applied could tend only to diminish the gulf between prices to producer and consumer. Personally, he believed Australia would be glad to make an offer to sell to the Imperial Government the whole cf next season's meat output, thereby lessening the channels of handling, and, incidentally, the price charged to the consumer.
