HIKURANGI RAILWAY.

LEVEL OROSSING DANGER. DEVIATION NOT ENTERTAINED. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT]. WHANGAREI Friday. Following upon a collision which occurred some weoks ago between a train and an agricultural tractor at a railway crossing on the Whangarei side of Hikurangi township, the Chamber of Commerce of the mining centre suggested to the Whangarei County Council that the main North Road be deviated to eliminate two crossings. It was stated that the road between the two crossings was in a bad state of repair, and the cost involved in carrying out the proposal would not bo much greater than that of reforming the present road. When seeking nn estimate of the cost, Mr. W. R. B. Bagge, district engineer of railways, advised the County Council that elimination of the crossing, howevor advisable if funds were available, was inadvisable as the money could bo spent to more advantage elsewhere. There were many crossings where the view was not as pood as at those particular crossings. Members of the council concurred'in that view, and authorised a reply to the Hikurangi Chamber of Commerce accordingly.
