COMMONWEALTH LINE.
ALTERED REGISTRATION.
TRANSFER TO BRITISH FLAG.
A. and N.Z.
SYDNEY. Nov. 8.
A decision of outstanding importance, which is likely to havo far-reaching results in the future, is reported to have been made by the Commonwealth Line. This is that steps shall be taken to remove all the company's steamers from the Australian register and register them as British vessels.
The decision is alleged to be the outcome of innumerable irritating strikes in Australia, which have placed the line at a great disadvantage, and resulted in tremendous aggregate losses. It will mean that the whole of the company's fleet can be manned .under British conditions.
When the report was referred to the Prime Minister, Mr. S. M. Brace, yesterday, he would neither confirm nor deny it. Earlier information stated that notice had been given in the London Gazette of October 14 that after 40 days it was proposed to apply for an order under the Merchant Shipping Act for the registration as British steamers of all the vessels belonging to the Commonwealth Line.
