HISTORIC COOK'S COVE.
NATIONAL RESERVATION.

GOVERNMENT'S GO-OPERATION.
[BY TELEGRAI>H. —OWX CORRESPONDENT.] GISBORNE. Friday. Steps are now being taken to secure the setting aside of Cook's Cove, Tolaga Bay, as a national reserve. The matter was taken up some time ago by Mr. E. B. Boland, chairman of the Uawa County Council, and was referred to the Scenery Preservation Board. The board reports that the land is suitable for acquisition both from a scenic and historic point of view. Probably 100 acres will be required. The board considers that the Uawa County Council and the residents of Tolaga Bay should contribute substantially toward the cost, the board being prepared to assist. The Minister is prepared to ask Cabinet to find half on condition that the land is transferred to the Crown. It is confidently anticipated that the amount required will be raised locally, thereby securing for all time one of the most historic spots connected with Captain Cook's early visit to New Zealand. Cook's Cove is within about half a mile the site of the new wharf, now about to be constructed at Tolaga Bay.
