The latest development in the waterside trouble is that the Moreton Bay's crew have received 24 hours' notice. The company will lay-up the vessel until a binding agreement with the dissatisfied unions is reached. It is stated that the inter-State shipping companies will endeavour to break the overtime strike by a policy pf passive non-resistance, and by the laying up of steamers. The trouble with the wharf labourers may go on indefinitely. Oversea shipping companies, with the aid of bureau workers, can carry on indefinitely, but the inter-State companies will continue to tie up steamers as soon as they are unloaded, and will not employ either bureau or free labour. The companies believe they are able to stand a siege longer than the Wharf Labourers' Union. The Sailors and Soldiers' Shipping Bureau has combined into a Wharf Labourers' Union, and will shortly apply for registration. A member of the shipping bureau on his way to work was assaulted, and a body of police has been despatched to the wharves as a precautionary measure. In future extra police will be placed on duty where bureau men may bo subjected to violence. The Moreton Bay passengers will be sent by train to Brisbane on Friday. It is probable the crew will be paid off arid the ship tied up. COMPULSORY CONFERENCE. REQUEST BY THE OWNERS. A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE, Not. 7. The Australasian Steamship Owners' Federation has decided to ask the president of the Arbitration Court to summon a compulsory conference in connection with "the overtime strike.
