THE VOTE IN SPAIN.
Not long; ago a deputation from the Consejo Supremo Feminists of Spun waited upon the Military Director to ask for the vote for Spanish wornea. General Priino de JRiyera received the depotatioia ■ very graciously, and recently a decree waa published giving uranicipal votes to ; women who are heads; of families. Those of 23' and over will be entitled to vote and they will also he eligible to stand as candidates. ■^ Royal As-\ sent it will be the first step towards full suffrage for Spanish women. -. r ' The feminist movement iti Spain, reports the official organ' of the International Women's Suffrage; Assbcia,tion, has made great progress in the? last few years. The Consejo Supremo alone numbers ten societies, and there are other big societies of women, notably the Action Catolica, all unanimous in demanding political enfranchisement. , In Spain all .professions are open . to, women, and there are, iilready a great number of -,women doctors of medicine, philosophy, and law. Women may attend colleges and universities and take their degrees.. ' t „ The President of the Consejo Supremo, Senora de Palencia, is a distinguished writer and lecturer. On a recent visit to London she lectured on Spain to big audiences, giving her lecture in English, which she speaks like : a native.
