Eleven cases were called but in a number there was no proof of service, and they ware adjourned. On behalf of the Taxation Department ■ Mr. H. T. Gillies said that the prosecu-, ' tions had been brought to bring home to the public that they must make their returns in time r Evgry case of delay meant • extra work for the department, necessitating a larger, staff iihich of course meant a' further burden on the country. It was not suggested that there had been any wil- ': • ful intent to evade payment.
