DIPHTHERIA IN SCHOOLS.
AN EPIDEMIC CHECKED.
The epidemic of diphtheria which recently threatened the schools at New Plymouth has now been practically stamped out. Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, medical officer of schools, and Nurse Wise, who have been engaged in the campaign against the epidemic for five weeks, have left to carry on their usual work of medically examining school children in other parts of the school district. ■■- Dr. Gunn said that 75 diphtheria " carriers " were found. Owing to the difficulties of keeping them properly isolated at home, a special classroom was given over to them at school, and lectures were given instructing the children concerning the dangers of giving.infection to others, etc. The isolating of the children at school had proved beneficial, as nearly all the cases, even the most stubborn, had been cleared up, and at present there were not more than five of the original carriers. .
