FOREST RANGERS.
COURSE OF INSTRUCTION.
Forest rangers are undergoing a refresher course at Whakarewarewa State Nurseries. Two rangers each from Auckland, Wellington, Southland, Westland, Otago, Canterbury and Rotorua, and others interested in forest work are
camped at Whakarew&rewa. The school is under Mr. A. H. Hanssen, chief inspector of the service. s The work, of afforestation from the gathering of seeds, preparing seed beds, growing and packing for transit is receiving first-hand attention. Cruising (timber measurement in site), and the caro of forest trees in being is given practical demonstration. Lectures by Messrs. H. A. Goudie, conservator of forests, A. H. Hanssen, Steels and Foster, are being given in subjects embracing all forest interests. The keenest attention is displayed by the men, and good results will undoubtedly be achieved by the interchange of ideas by thoso whose districts are wide apart. The instructional course is to be continued for three weeks, in which time all subjects can be fully dealt with.
