The Rugby League club championships were further advanced on Saturday. The chief attraction at Carlaw Park was the game" between City and Richmond. The Auckland League's ruling, which was upheld by the Now Zealand Council, that. L. Brown was not eligible to play for City, was challenged by this club, and Brown took his place'in the City team. It was not anticipated that Richmond would make, the game even, and this contention proved correct, City having little difficulty in winning On , No. 2 ground Athletio defeated ■Ellerslie, after an even gam©. At the Domain Marist triumphed over. Newton, while at Devonport, Shore proved far too strong for Mangere. Tho playing areas in each match resembled . ft sea of mud. Tho results in the senior matches are: City 32, 'beat Richmond '7. Athletio 14, beat Ellerslie 3. Marists 39,' beat Newton 3. Devonport 24, beat Mangere 3. • In the match against City, Richmond wore the first to show up, after the kickoff, but City cleared, and B. Davidson, gaining possession, made a good run before transferring to Brown, who raced, over. Crewther converted. City came again, and Mitchell whipped tho ball out to Wetberall, who transferred to Crewther, to B. Dn.viason, and cut to Brown, who raced round to gcore under the posts. Crewther kicked the goal. Richmond rallied; and carried play to City's territory, but Wetherali made a good run before passing to Brown. The latter kicked, and, following up smartly, Mitchell got tho ball,- to pass on to Crewther. who dashed across under the posts. Wis kicK wan_ successful. It, was now tipparent that City wore too strong for their opponents, who, nevertheless, carried on gamely. Ilawkes was the next to ecore after a fine "dribbling" effort. Richmond showed up in an attack before being awarded a kick, which Butler put over, giving Richmond- their first score. Continuing to attack. . Richmond wore again prominent, and being again awarded a penalty Butler succeeded with the kick. Hyland broke away well and looked like snorinnr until obstructed. Butler had a shot, but, the kick failed. City again took tip th" attack, and their backt brought off a. brilliant run. MsDonald followed up a kick, and getting tho leather passed on to. Hawkes. who peered under the posts. His kick at goal failed. A dribbling rush hy Richmond terminated in Whit-ling scoring Butler's shot missed. Uninteresting play followed, until G. Davidson broke away, but B. Davidson spoiled tho chance by being offside. Bass nest made a good run before passing to Cargiii, who dashed over. This was not converted. Another try was added by B. Davidson. Brown crossed the lino, but lost the hall in falling, and Davidson foil on it. Bass failed with the kick. Athletic v. Ellerslie. Ellerslie set tho game going, and a scrum took pJace near Athletic's line. A score looked likely until Athletic cleared. Ellerslie attacked again, and had their opponents hemmed in, until Avery relieved. G. . Yardley started a fine passing bout which looked like scoring, until McGregor missed his pass. Athletic came again, and G. Yard ley parsed to McGregor, who dashed over . Woolley missed with the kick. Athletic dominated the play, but the Ellerslie fullback saved. A rush by tho RU.erslie forwards looked dangerous. Athletic were penalised, but Hettet missed an easy shot at goal. A rush "by Ellerslie followed, and Andrews kicked the ball over, to touch down. Hettet's kick was successful. Ellerslie continued to attack, and offside play by.Tewhata saw Hettet's attempt at goal go wide. Harrison next broke away with tho ball at to®. He picked up and passed to Brien, and a score • seemed certain, until Cox tackled well. Herrick relieved with a useful kick. Half-time sounded with the scores: Ellerslie 5, Athletic 5.

On resuming, from a scrum Nicholson whipped out to Yardley, but Ellerslie backs smothered. Avery was next prominent in a nice run down the lino, and then transferred to G. Yardley, who was tackled by Johnson. Athletic attacked hotly,, and after Yardley, Avery, and McGregor had handled the ball tho latter dashed over. G. Yardloy failed with tho kick. Shortly after Woolley made a fine run, and beating tho opposition badly, scored a fine> try. Yardley converted. , Williams was then conspicuous by a good run, but Cox, Athletic's fullback, saved what looked like being a certain score. From a scrum shortly afterwards Hadley got possession and dived over. Ho missed the kick at goal. Newton v. Mar'ist.

Newton attacked from tho kick-off, but the ilarist backs made a good movement down-field, which ended in Kirland scoring. Poison was unfortunate in getting a severe knock, and had to retire. A fine effort by Marist .'saw Fosa pass in to Brisbane, who went over, and Gardiner goaled. The Newton forwards made a nice rush, but _ Gregory saved well. Brisbane again obtained possession, and passed to Foss. who transferred back, for Brisbane to. score. Gardiner converted. Gardiner then made a spectacular run from half way. to score under tho posts. His kick was successful. A few minutes later Gardiner again got possession, and running through the opposition again added a try and goal. The spell ended: Marist 23, Newton 0.

.On resuming Newton forwards showed tip. and taking tho ball to Marist's line Stack got possession, to diva over.. Waring failed with the kick.

Marists were showing up particularly well on, tho muddy ground, and their bac'lt3, of whom Stowart and Brisbane were most prominent, made many fine efforts. Newton: showed up now and again, but «ny efforts near Marist's lino were frustrated by Gregory, who was playing beautiful football. Gardiner and Keary were showing up well, tho other Marist forwards ably supporting them.

In the second spell tries were scored by Gardiner, Stormont. , Foss, O'Brien, Sherlock. and Kirland. Keary converted two with particularly fine kicks.

Devonport's Decisive Win. The game at Devonport between Mangere and the local team saw the home side provo too good for their ' opponents, who nevertheless put up a plucky game. The first half saw many good movements on the part of Devonport, Laing, Goddick and Douglas bei'ng prominent. The spell ended with the scores: Devonport 13 Mangere 3.

The second spell saw Devonport improve their position, but the game was noticeable for many spectacular bouts and exciting play. Hapi, Rukatai, Wilson, and Paul were seen making big efforts for Mangere>, but tho Shore defence was sound.

Although United proved tho winnorn by 35 points to 8, tho play was fairly even. The game was not a very good exhibition, for United the following scored tries: Young 4, Muir 3, Robinson and Millard; tries were converted by Muir (2), Millard and Hemingway.
