Renter. LONDON, June 26. " -'Records of most violent earthquake "shocks are reported to have been registered in several world centres.

■ rAt Faenza, Italy, the record of the disturbances taken at the Bendandis Observatory began at 3 o'clock in the morning and lasted for four hours. The earthquake appeared to have occurred 7000 miles away; u- ; The quivering of the apparatus was so tpronounced that it was thrown out of action. : Reports from Capetown state that shocks were registered at the Royal Observatory. They lasted, two and a-half hours, beginning at 3.5 a.m. The centre of the disturbance was apparently 56DQ miles off. AUSTRALIAN' RECKONING. LOCATION, SOUTH PACIFIC. ONE OF MACQUARIE ISLANDS. The principal of the River View Observatory states that, through a hasty reading of the recording instrument, a mistake was made in announcing that yesterday's earthquake was centred at Port Moresby, New Guinea. The real position indicated as the location of the disturbance was the Macquario lislands, in the South Pacific, 1740 miles from Sydney. The shocks were very violent and continued for over half an hour, one instrument vibrating so much that it kept hitting against the stops. - A cablegram . from New York published yesterday stated that a message had been received from San Jose, California, to the effect that an earthquake, approximately of the same violence as that which occurred recently in Japan, had been recorded there. r The centre of the disturbance was thought to have been in Central America. The shocks continued for over ( an hour and a-half. The earthquake was registered at the Santa Clara University. It commenced 'at six o'clock, in the evening.
